No Posts for a Month and a Half!
It hurts doesn’t it? But I’m back…at least briefly.
I’m on a mission to write an essay to send in with my applications to University of Central Florida and KU. The essay has to illustrate environment, culture, or family history that has influenced who I am. At first I thought of some shallow things. For example scouting and listing out the points of the scout law (trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent). Mrs. A, my independent study teacher thought this would just look like another list of accomplishments instead of an essay. I’ve had a suggestion to write about how I was encouraged to step out of my box last school year, and arrange a piece of music for the SHHS brass quintet. I figure it would be a cool story and a good example of environment, but I feel as though it covers a relatively too short amount of time and events. I guess it may work out well though, since the essay has to be about 250 words (with another 250 words about how the experience/environment will help me as a student at UCF/KU/where-ever).
I really need to get to my essay, but I will say that it feels good to be a senior and 18 years old. It feels good to be doing tons of music related things. It all feels pretty dang good right now. More later 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

Government: Week Seven Vocabulary: Creative Story
Here is something I had to make up to show understanding of some vocab words in government class.
In the Scopes trial, where John Scopes’ teaching of Darwinian theory was questioned, the court with jurisdiction over the case submitted a certiorari, requesting records from the lower court that previously handled the case. Many people thought Darwinian Theory should be shown the same affirmative action, or priority, that slave had recently received regarding citizenship.
Some radicals protested Scopes by burning their babies at the stake in front of the courthouse. Soon after, the government made an ex post facto law banning burning babies, but could not charge the previously “innocent” perpetrators.
The officials that could not charge the baby burners were extremely frustrated. One of official who had gained his position through a lead gained by pork barrel legislation was so frustrated that he failed to see someone sleeping in the road, and ran his wagon over the sleeper. The official was arrested and charged with negligence for not showing enough care for others’ safety. In his case the official and his lawyer tried to offer the reason of frustration and obscure Scopes trial references as circumstantial evidence which backfired when the evidence and resulting inferred evidence was all debunked. The official lost his case and was sent to prison in Zimbabwe.
In Zimbabwe the official met the United States consul, who was looking after the U.S.’s interest in ivory products. The consul and the official fell in love and the consul broke the official out of prison. They later moved to Canada where they could legally pursue gay marriage, and were happily wed. The rest of that story is for another week government vocabulary.

Early Senior Year
Wow. My senior year has been wonderfully busy.
And this good ol’ site of mine has gotten quite dry as a result.
Best comic ever. Sorry for the messed up quality – click for more.

Youtube: Beatboxing flute, funny cats
This guy can totally beatbox and play Mario on a flute at the same time!
And this is why I love kitties!
These cats talk!
More funny ones.
I need to stop watching all these and find something useful to do.

Reading Outweighs Writing
One week ago (Saturday) I was at Barnes and Noble, just hanging out looking for AP study books (for my two wonderful AP classes this school year). I ended up not getting any AP books because I wanted to find out which publisher or brand would serve me best. However, on the bargain rack, while waiting in line with my girlfriend I randomly happened upon “The Evelyn Wood Speed-Reading and Learning Program.” I instantly said “Hey, I could really use this…my reading speed sucks…but will it really work?” I started the book and very quickly changed a few of my habits and doubled my reading speed! I finished the book (200pgs) in about four days, much faster than I generally read.
I did some research on the internet and found a program called “EyeQ” which is a series of visual exercises to workout your six sets of eye muscles and enhance your field of vision. There are also reading speed/comprehension tests and log pages, showing that I’ve more than doubled my speed using the program.
I then went to the library and picked up “Breakthrough Rapid Reading” which is more of a workbook to really help apply Evelyn Wood techniques. I have now more than tripled my speed after another four days of work! I must say I was skeptical of this whole thing at first but its really working.
This has all sparked a new interest for me in reading…which should also help with my AP Lit and Comp class. Boy, its exciting. So look up Evelyn Wood and rapid reading and whatever. Maybe you’ll be really glad…I know I am.

George Carlin – Some Favorite Quotes
I stumbled upon this guy this morning online, and he has some great sayings:
“If a movie is described as a romantic comedy, you can usually find me next door playing pinball.”
…Agreed.
“By and large, language is a tool for concealing the truth.”
Ahh yes, so many people fall into the truth of this.
“Isn’t it a bit unnerving that doctors call what they do ‘practice’Âť?”
hehe
“What year did Jesus think it was?”
…
“In America, anyone can become president. That’s the problem.”
bah haha
“Thou shalt keep thy religion to thyself.”
This would solve a lot of my personal problems. Though, if everyone did keep it to themselves and only one person was right, it would suck. Just imagine though, every single person, isolated from everyone else would think they were correct, and the only one going to be saved or something. Wait, that sounds like some people I know.
“Just think, right now as you read this, some guy somewhere is gettin’ ready to hang himself.”
“‘Meow’ means ‘woof’ in cat.”
“What was the best thing before sliced bread?”
Cavewomen?
“Ever notice that anyone going slower than you is an idiot, but anyone going faster is a maniac?”
This one is one of my favorites…it just implies that “chill out” lifestyle. Don’t worry, just go with the flow, you know? Sit back and smell the coffee.
School is in 2 days. I’m excited. More Later. Peace Out.

DCI Quarterfinals Inspiration
Last night I went with a few friends to see the Drum Corps International Quarterfinals. Every year they broadcast the quarters live to select movie theaters around the nation…one being Emporia 30 in the Kansas City area. We left home around 3.15pm and got there at about 4.15pm, and grabbed the best seats in the house. The show started at 6.00pm. Last year we got to the theater at about 5.30 and the place was packed and we didn’t get to sit near each other…so it was worth it being an hour and a half early.
Sidenote: As of the past week I’ve kind of felt out of my personal drumming routine. Yeah, sure, I’ve been rocking out at marching band at school and all, but I haven’t had time to practice at home much. I also haven’t had a drum lesson with my great teacher in over a month, so it’s all been “on hold” it seems like. I’m not going to be able to have as many drum lessons this semester, so I need to come up with a personal schedule and work ethic to keep plowing through stuff.
Back to main story: So seeing the top 17 drum corps perform their 2007 quarterfinal show was quite awesome. I saw a lot of cool things, and I kept saying to myself “I want to do that, I want to do that!” Well, I woke up this morning and whipped out the 2005 Cavaliers audition packet. I remember 2 years ago, I couldn’t come close to playing some stuff in the packet, and now I can do all of it with just a few minutes of practice! I worked on one of the percussion feature excerpts from The Cavaliers “007” show for about 10 minutes, and I have it down! So now I’m feeling really good about having a chance a drum corps sometime soon! Maybe this coming season!
So I have new fervor to work on my marching chops, and I hope to audition for a drum corps or two this fall. I get excited just thinking about it!

Pilgrimage Pictures
Hello all! I’m back from England (as of last Tuesday) but have been very busy with marching band marathons, church stuff, etc and haven’t felt much like posting anything. I’m sort of written out at this point…I wrote 13 pages in one sitting on the plane home from London. mmm That was good!
Anyway – here is the pilgrimpictures website – http://pilgrimage.wingerson.us/pilgrimpictures – my 800 pictures are up, as well as a few hundred from my dad. Hopefully others will add too. Anyway – maybe I’ll post up more stuff once marching band marathons are over and my mind/body can function again. hehe.
Till then – happy trails or something.
