Last night I went with a few friends to see the Drum Corps International Quarterfinals. Every year they broadcast the quarters live to select movie theaters around the nation…one being Emporia 30 in the Kansas City area. We left home around 3.15pm and got there at about 4.15pm, and grabbed the best seats in the house. The show started at 6.00pm. Last year we got to the theater at about 5.30 and the place was packed and we didn’t get to sit near each other…so it was worth it being an hour and a half early.
Sidenote: As of the past week I’ve kind of felt out of my personal drumming routine. Yeah, sure, I’ve been rocking out at marching band at school and all, but I haven’t had time to practice at home much. I also haven’t had a drum lesson with my great teacher in over a month, so it’s all been “on hold” it seems like. I’m not going to be able to have as many drum lessons this semester, so I need to come up with a personal schedule and work ethic to keep plowing through stuff.
Back to main story: So seeing the top 17 drum corps perform their 2007 quarterfinal show was quite awesome. I saw a lot of cool things, and I kept saying to myself “I want to do that, I want to do that!” Well, I woke up this morning and whipped out the 2005 Cavaliers audition packet. I remember 2 years ago, I couldn’t come close to playing some stuff in the packet, and now I can do all of it with just a few minutes of practice! I worked on one of the percussion feature excerpts from The Cavaliers “007” show for about 10 minutes, and I have it down! So now I’m feeling really good about having a chance a drum corps sometime soon! Maybe this coming season!
So I have new fervor to work on my marching chops, and I hope to audition for a drum corps or two this fall. I get excited just thinking about it!
i remember that. i went last year…wait, i saw you there. that was tight. who won?
