1/23/05 – Invent a Holiday

I believe if I were to invent a new holiday, it would be “help the poor day.” Instead of spending money on building projects, investing in the economy, exploring space, or worrying about getting rich, we should stop and think for a day. We could all plan to re-budget or something, to include donations to shelters, the homeless, poor countries, etc. Just think, if we weren’t giving money to NASA we could feed millions of people everyday. The holiday could be September 1st, so we could make sure people had enough money to get through the winter. I guess this all sounds pretty dumb but one must admit it would make the world a better place.

1/25/06 – “The Pen is Mightier Than the Sword”

“The pen is mightier than the sword.” I disagree with this statement. For example, if someone from one country shows a peices of paper to their enemies that declares that country now owns it’s enemies’ lands, the enemies can totally reject it. Even if they did agree, they could tear up the document and burn it. On second thought, perhaps the pen could be mightier, in the way of public persuasion. Maybe, before a political election, people write things about canadits. This could sway the vote and completely change the outcome and future. I guess “The pen is mightier than the sword” could be argued true or false…it’s just a matter of opinion.

1/27/06 – Freewrite

This week has been pretty cool. Sunday, I put a new stereo in my car. It sounds really good. I absolutely love listening to my music when I’m going places. It’s just so awesome. Also this week I’ve been playing the drums a lot, improving ma skillz. I showed a couple things I came up with to my older brother, and he seemed a bit mad and frustrated. The reality is we started playing at the same time, but he is seven years older than me. I’ve also had private lessons, so it seems I’m ahead of him, but it makes me feel kind of bad. Anyways. THis weekend I don’t really have anything to do, except work on a history project and go the church. I’ll probably get together with some friends, just to hang out. I don’t really thinkg there is much else I’d rather do, than hang out with friends. This is drumming but……… Also, if I had to chose between seeing a movie or just hanging out, I’d rather hang out. I can see movies alone.

have you read Anthem by Ayn Rand?
if you ask the right questions, that book can make you think about existence…what the point of life really is…
its wounds are deeper than a sword could ever cut.

I think it’s absurd to even compare a pen to a sword. They both have tremendous power, but at the same time, weaknesses. A sword can persuade via threats, causing suffering, or respect and a pen can persuade through words written. The pain the two can cause are incomparable: physical and psychological. Apples and oranges. A sword can be melted down, scratched or bent, and a pen can be crushed or the words written burned or torn. I guess it all depends on circumstances, how the tools are used, and parties involved. There is no STP for this sort of application, and to assume as much and try to reach a logical, rational conclusion is ultimately counterproductive.
