Music For You

Many people that know me probably see me as very picky and close-minded about music. I’m a music junkie, not in the way that I have an iPod surgically implanted into my arm, but that I also play and write music. I am also considering a career in music performance or education, so obviously its a big priority for me, located near the top of my list. If you don’t want my opinions on music, too bad, becuase here they are.

1) It Should All Be Different. For me, music isn’t something that should be repeatitive. Obviously I don’t mean that a song shouldn’t have two verses or shouldn’t have the same chorus repeated anywhere; I mean I don’t want to hear the same song over and over…neither do I want to hear very similar guitar or bass parts, melodies, or drum grooves over and over. Many artists on the market seem to just be there becuase they want the money and the fame, but they lack creativity. They are forcing it to happen rather than just letting it happen. They say “We need another album! Let’s make 8 new songs in the next month!” And guess what? It all turns out the same, and they end up with a CD with 1 or 2 fresh songs on it, while the others are just flawed mirrors of those fresh tunes. I can’t stand it.

2) My Music Isn’t Better Than Yours. I despise people who seem to think their music is the best, but alas, I’m probably one of those. I could care less if you want me to hear a song. I’d rather find music myself, enjoying the hunt, stumbling into random things on the way. I don’t really like being fed music, because I want to find my own unique list of favorites…not follow my friends’. This way my music is better than yours, for me. The statement “Mine’s better” shouldn’t be taken personally, becuase it’s my opinion, and it holds true for me. Vice versa, my music isn’t better than yours for you. Make music yours.

3) Find Your New Music. I’ve found a few great places to try finding music. And they’re all FREE!

• Pandora – Here you can enter your favorite band or song, and a new radio station is set up, playing music similar to your favorite.
• Last.fm – Very similar to Pandora, only they also set up community type things, like groups, ranging from “linux users” to “Outkast lovers.”
• Music-map – Here you enter one of your favorite bands, and the site maps out similar bands. The closer the more similar. It is built off of user input, so you can enter your own top 3, adding to the system, helping other people to find new music.
• Me – I have excellent musical taste, for me actually, but you may just end up liking what I do. So you can shoot me a comment or email.
